AutoCAD has a drag-and-drop interface and a command line that allows users to create and modify objects in 2D and 3D space. AutoCAD is a very powerful program, with powerful features and configurable settings, but is also powerful enough for an expert to use quickly, or for a beginner to learn on. It is often recommended to install the Microsoft Windows environment before beginning AutoCAD because the program is tightly integrated into the Windows environment and does not come pre-installed on macOS, Linux, or most Linux distributions. In addition, AutoCAD does not have a 64-bit version available for macOS, although it can be run in 32-bit mode.

What is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is a powerful 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) application created and marketed by Autodesk. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

With the release of AutoCAD LT 2019, Autodesk is moving towards a subscription model, with a pay per use model for users. Currently, there are a limited number of free versions of AutoCAD, however, Autodesk plans to expand the free offering in future releases.
In 2018, Autodesk introduced a new pricing model for AutoCAD, including a membership offering that will allow users to purchase several types of subscription-based software at a discounted price. The monthly fee for AutoCAD was US$18.99 for 2017. In December 2018, it was announced that Autodesk would lower the price of the desktop version of AutoCAD by up to a third.
