What’s New In Compressor?

We use a feedback type loop for the reduction of gain. We do this with the help of two different analog voice coils.
First, an envelope follower is used to analyse the amplitude envelop of the signal.
This envelope follower is a saturable core circuit which should be quite common to design.
After this, the second signal is amplified by a variable gain amplifier. We have a set point and the gain is adjusted to be as low as possible. When the signal is above the set point, we reduce the amplifier gain. The set point has a certain cut off frequency and setting a lower value then reduces the gain when the signal is below this frequency.
The output signal, which is the output of the amplifier, is fed back to the input of the amplifier. When we increase the gain then the signal follows this loop until the input signal is no longer amplified any more.
When we reduce the gain, the feedback loop is closed again and the amplifier now amplifies the signal until the amplitude exceeds the set point again.
When the gain is too low, we need some sort of compensation. That’s where the manual gain control comes into play. With this value, the input level is automatically adjusted and a compensation is done.
The output signal goes through a limiter to protect the circuit and the input signal.
